What is Sigma Lambda Chi?
Sigma Lambda Chi is the international honor society for construction, which is headquartered at Purdue University.
What is the history of Sigma Lambda Chi?
Sigma Lambda Chi was founded by a group of individuals from Michigan State University who strived to enhance the construction profession. The first chapter was established on April 30, 1949, during which the general guidelines for the organization were developed. To date, Sigma Lambda Chi has grown to include 54 chapters throughout the United States and Australia, with a total membership of over ten thousand.
Epsilon III, the Sigma Lambda Chi chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, was founded on April 27, 1994. This chapter includes 21 current members and 144 Epsilon chapter members. The chapter advisors are Tim Becker and Mickey Spencer. Current Board members are Brandon Vagt (President), Bo Christman (Vice-President), Karl Fels (Treasurer) and Mitch Schindler (Secretary).
What is the purpose of Sigma Lambda Chi?
The three objectives of Sigma Lambda Chi are:
1. The first is to render service to the major field of study. This is accomplished by active student participation in tasks and events that affect the construction program that houses the local Sigma Lambda Chi chapter.
2. The second objective is to develop good working relationships among campus, industry, and the public. Undertaking projects which further this purpose is expected of members of Sigma Lambda Chi.
3. The third objective is to recognize outstanding professional individuals in construction. Sigma Lambda Chi has honorary membership classifications that can be bestowed upon individuals who deserve special recognition because of their contribution to construction education or some facet of the construction industry.
These objectives re-accomplished with active member participation in tasks and events related to the UW-Stout construction program and Sigma Lambda Chi.
How often does the Epsilon III chapter meet?
A meeting is held approximately every other week on Monday evenings, during which we discuss upcoming events and any ideas brought forth by members. Member attendance is greatly encouraged – the time and ideas of each member determines the future success of the entire chapter.
Why do we want you to become a member of Sigma Lambda Chi?
Your academic success reflects your personal competence, dedication, and thorough understanding of the construction field. Our members feel your leadership skills and knowledge would help promote our organization with integrity and responsibility. As a reward, students, faculty, and industry professionals consider your membership an outstanding achievement.
How do I become a member of Sigma Lambda Chi?
Students must accomplish several requirements for membership, these include earning an overall scholastic average in the upper twenty-percent of their incoming class, participate in at least one extracurricular activity, work in some phase of the construction or its allied fields, having completed at least 15 AEC credits and demonstrate character traits that promise the reflection of integrity upon Sigma Lambda Chi. A student’s acceptance into this organization requires a life-long commitment to ensure quality construction, efficient use of materials, and include high ethical standards and responsibility in all daily activities and decisions.
How does Epsilon III render service to the UW-Stout Construction program?
Members render service to the UW-Stout Construction program by hosting the annual career fair, selling personal protection equipment to students, ensuring the development of a scholarship fund, and maintaining the Construction Library. Other activities that help develop good relations with the campus, industry, and public include giving tours to potential freshmen, attendance at industry presentations and field trips, and participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program. Lastly, each year we vote for one faculty member and one industry professional to become an honorary member.
The fundamental purpose of Sigma Lambda Chi is to provide recognition to outstanding students in construction curricula. Sigma Lambda Chi is the society that offers students the opportunity to be recognized locally and internationally for their academic accomplishments as a construction major.
